Mapaghimalang Birhen ng Caysasay A new religious musical written and directed by Nestor U. Torre, with music composed by Ryan Cayabyab. This production seeks to make the 400 year tradition of Our Lady of Caysasay in Taal, Batangas, accessible to today’s audiences, particularly to young viewers. It starts with the return to Taal of a Filipino-American family – Paul, Sylvia and their children, Laine and Tobey. Sylvia is gravely ill with leukemia, and seeks the Virgin’s healing intercession. However, her teenage daughter Laine doesn’t believe in the healing tradition. To make her believe, she is transported back to the distant past four centuries ago, and witnesses the miraculous events that gave birth to the tradition: the finding of the Virgin’s image in the net of a fisherman; the image’s playful series of disappearances; its being found again more than 8 years later; the miraculous healings affected through the years due to the Virgin’s intercession. The most celebrated of these miracles was the bringing back to life of a Chinese stonemason named Haybing, three days after his decapitation. In the end, Laine understand and believes in the healing tradition, and her mother is healed in time for the celebration of the annual fiesta of the loving and healing Birheng Maria, Our Lady of Caysasay.
